(WASHINGTON) -- Gas prices are on the decline nationwide after a quick rise. The U.S. Department of Energy says that in the last week the national average for regular unleaded gas has fallen 5 cents to $3.71.

California remains the most expensive state for gas, but drivers there are seeing prices decline as well.  The average price for gas on the West Coast is down 4 cents at $4.17.

Gas prices may still seem sky high now, but compare these prices to this time last year, when the price was 20 cents higher in California, according to the Energy Department. Nationwide, it was 12 cents higher a year ago.
